Acts of the Conference on Company Law and the Single Market, Brussels, 15-16.12.97

Summary:

This publication brings together contributions from participants at the Conference on company law organised by the Commission in Brussels on 15 and 16 December 1997. The conference was the culmination of the consultation exercise launched by the Commission's questionnaire of February 1997. The purpose of this wide-reaching exercise was to help the Commission to draw up a work programme for the European Union in the field of company law based on a broad consensus about the changes that are needed to meet today's needs. The next step is the Commission communication on company law, setting out the path ahead.

More than 100 people attended the conference, including representatives of businesses, government officials, legal practitioners and academics. By producing this publication, we intend to encourage the continuation of the debate initiated by the questionnaire and the conference. A permanent debate on these issues in the only way that company law evolves to meet the demands of the single market and of economic and monetary union.
