After months of dispute, the Commission has finally agreed plans to make used-car dismantling more environmentally friendly

The proposal, adopted after a compromise was struck between Commissioners Ritt Bjerregaard (environment) and Martin Bangemann (industry), sets targets for the reuse, recycling and recovery of cars and their components, and seeks to encourage manufacturers to design cars with a view to recycling.
