Summary: The short-stay visa waiver agreement provides for visa-free travel for the citizens of the European Union and for the citizens of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas when travelling to the territory of the other contracting party. The agreement was amended in 2018 in order to incorporate the new definition of the concept of 'short-stay'. Further information: Regulation (EU) No 610/2013 re-defined the concept of 'short-stay' for third-country nationals in the Schengen area. The amendment introduced all the necessary changes in the EU's visa and borders acquis. However, the concept of short-stay was also enshrined in certain international agreements concluded by the European Union. In October 2014 the Council of the European Union authorised the opening of negotiations for amending the short-stay visa waiver agreement between the EU and the relevant third countries. The negotiations with the Bahamas were successfully finalised by the initialling of the new agreement in August 2016. In July 2017 the European Commission presented proposals on the signing and conclusion of the agreement. The signing was approved on 6 November by Council Decision (EU) 2017/2085, and the signature took place in Brussels on 25 April 2018. The conclusion of the agreement was approved on 20 December 2018 by Council Decision (EU) 2019/77. |
