Former Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb announced on 2 October 2018 his candidacy to become the European People's Party (EPP) lead candidate in the 2019 European elections. Despite a wide campaign performed in different European cities, Mr Stubb did not manage to secure a victory at the annual EPP Congress.
Alexander Stubb was the second figure within the EPP to put forward a candidacy for the Spitzenkandidat position. The election took place at the EPP congress after an exchange of views between the candidates. Mr Stubb managed to secure a mere 20 percent of the votes.
