Date: 16/11/1995 The minutes of a recent meeting of the Commission's Chefs de Cabinet dutifully recorded the full solidarity of them all for one amongst them who has recently been the target of vicious attacks in newspapers. Who can this un-named victim be? Not, surely, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, Mario Monti's right-hand man? Not the man accused of engineering the dismissal of Peter Wilmott, director-General of DG XXIII, over the failure of long-overdue VAT collection proposals? Not, heaven forbid, the man accused of erecting a “ring of steel” around his Commissioner and who reportedly restricts access to Monti's full diary to three people, the Commissioner, Moavero himself and one assistant? No, confirms an insider, it can't be him. Moavero could never get the full backing of the other chefs - unless they're just being polite.
