Background

The European Union (Withdrawal) Bill 2017-19 was introduced by the United Kingdom government in July 2017. The Bill would repeal the European Communities Act 1972 and make other provision in connection with the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU.

The Report Stage and Third Reading ('remaining stages') took place on the 16-17 January 2018.The 16-17 January 2018 saw the start of two days of report stage debate in the House of Commons on the content of the EU (Withdrawal) Bill. At committee stage, amendments were made that created a new sifting committee for statutory instruments related to Brexit.

Joel Blackwell, of The Hansard Society, argued below that the current proposals were insufficient to guarantee proper scrutiny and made several recommendations for changes that could be made before the bill passes to the House of Lords.
