The Commission's Communication on the long-term competitiveness in the European Union (EU) published earlier in 2023 identified Web 4.0 as a ground-breaking technological transition towards a world where everything is seamlessly interconnected. The European Council urged the EU in March 2023 to remain at the forefront of Web 4.0 development. Virtual worlds are seen as an important part of this transition to Web 4.0.
This Communication was adopted by the European Commission on 11 July 2023, and it sets out the strategy and proposed actions on virtual worlds and Web 4.0. The accompanying Staff Working Document provides background information on the stakeholder consultations, overall market trends, opportunities for the various industrial ecosystems, technological trends and the current regulatory framework.
