This report on the environmental effects of certain Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) production subsidies was produced by Defra in April 2002. It provides analyses of the effects of CAP pillar 1 direct aids and largely confirms the view that the CAP has been the biggest, though not the only, influence on agricultural land use since the UK's accession to the European Union. To assist in the production of those analyses, Defra commissioned a report on these effects from the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, also published in April 2002. (Please click on Related Url).
