Summary:

The European Ombudsman published in June 2001 the annual report covering the activities of his office for the year 2000.

Further information:

The Nice meeting of the European Council in December 2000 represented an international agreement on human
rights, the new Charter of Fundamental Rights, included a right to good administration for EU citizens.

The year 2000 has been the year in which Internet communication with the citizens has truly developed. Of the 1732 complaints received in 2000, 420 were sent by E-mail.

To overcome the high number of complaints that fall outside the mandate, the European Ombudsman's Office has established a close co-operation with the national ombudsmen and similar bodies in the Member States.

The mandate of the Ombudsman, established by Article 195 of the EC Treaty, empowers him to receive complaints from any citizen of the Union or any natural or legal person residing or having its registered office in a Member State, concerning instances of maladministration in the activities of Community institutions and bodies with the exception of the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance acting in their judicial role.
