Muscovites formed a 10-mile human chain around their city’s ring road on the 26 February 2012, the latest in a series of demonstrations against the rule of prime minister Vladimir Putin.

With a week to go before the ex-KGB colonel would almost certainly be re-elected to the Presidency for a third term, Russia’s three-month-old protest movement was trying to reinvent itself and prove its staying power into the post-election period.
