Stella Kyriakides (or Kyriakidou) was a member of the Cypriot Parliament and was appointed by the country's President as the candidate for the College of Commissioners on 26 July 2019. Her background in health matters led media sources to predict a related portfolio for the lawmaker. Ms Kyriakides was formally announced on 9 September 2019 by the President of the European Commission. Her portfolio was known on the following day, set to take on the role as the European Commissioner for Health.

The relevant committees of the European Parliament held a hearing with Ms Kyriakides on 1 October, in order to assess her capabilities to lead the portfolio. Media sources later reported that she had been approved as a suitable candidate.
