Poland’s liberal and centrist opposition has struggled to challenge the country’s Law and Justice government since losing the 2015 Polish election. Aleks Szczerbiak wrote that the opposition lacked convincing leadership and had failed to offer a credible and attractive alternative to Poles on the issues that they cared most about.

But the right-wing ruling party would go into local elections in autumn 2018 with high expectations and the most high profile contests would be fought in areas where the opposition was relatively strong.
