The United Kingdom's drive to reform the European Court of Human Rights, launched by UK Prime Minister David Cameron in January 2012, was in danger of coming to a standstill after Austria, one of the next countries to take over the presidency of the Council of Europe from the UK, said in March 2012 that it had 'serious concerns' about his ideas.

Austrian diplomats said the UK’s planned changes for the court would restrict access to justice and weaken the rights of individuals across Europe.
