The Balance of Competences Review was launched by the UK Foreign Secretary, William Hague, in July 2012 to examine the balance of competences between the UK and the European Union.

The review will provide an analysis of what the UK’s membership of the EU means for the UK national interest.

The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is leading the Agriculture and Fisheries reports. The Agriculture report will examine EU powers for the Common Agricultural Policy, plant health and forestry. The Fisheries report will examine EU powers for the Common Fisheries Policy, the management of fisheries and the farming of fish and shellfish.
