Book abstract:

Focusing on the Balkan states, this book looks at topical issues including the political and economic impact of the recent conflict on its emerging states and also the future for the rebuilding of these states. The book consists of a series of essays written by non-Balkan analysts from academic backgrounds, thereby providing an objective viewpoint.

The book is divided into two parts the first of which has seven linked essays. The essays are on issues including the Stability Pact signed in Cologne in 1999; regional co-operation in South Eastern Europe; poverty and development in South Eastern Europe; the transition from Communism; and economic reconstruction in South Eastern Europe from a Western point of view. The second part of the book consists of a series of Balkan country profiles examining the long and short term challenges faced by them. Also examined are the relationships between politics and economics and problems such as poverty.

The book provides a detailed examination of the topical issues related to the Balkan states and would be of use to those interested from an academic perspective.
