Book abstract:

This book examines the tactical influence of the Single Market Programme (SMP) and the European Monetary Union (EMU) on European banks and banking systems. Early on, the editors stress how significant an impact on the credit sector these organisations are having and will continue to have on modern European history. The economic benefits they have brought are thought to include, to begin with, more competitive markets, greater innovation, lower prices, and a larger output overall.

Broken down into twelve chapters, including the introduction, the book deals with the development of these issues in eleven countries. These are as follows: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the UK. Most chapters follow a fairly methodical pattern, with systematic assessments of market structure and performance, the regulatory framework, the impact of the SMP, and bank arrangements for the EMU within each member state. Conclusions on the current situation of each country are offered where appropriate.

The book is aimed at scholars and economists with interests in the banking sector.
