Barroso aims to forge new energy relationship between EU and Russia

The European Commission launched a Green Paper on energy on 8 March 2006 which includes plans for a deal with Russia, Europe's biggest gas supplier. European Commission President José Manuel Barroso is to travel to Moscow during March 2006 to urge President Vladimir Putin to permit other countries to transport gas to Europe through Russian pipes. In return, the EU may agree to open its retail energy market to Russian energy suppliers.
