A determined crackdown by the Belarusian police against even the smallest sign of dissent to the country’s authoritarian government in the summer of 2011 forced opposition activists to rethink their tactics.

Anti-government activists launched unusual 'silent protests' after more conventional demonstrations – which broke out following widely condemned presidential elections in December 2010 – were broken up with overwhelming force. The demonstrators would like to democratise Belarus, ruled since 1994 by President Alexander Lukashenko.
