The German government has agreed in principle to cut taxes in 2013, although Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble warned there was little chance of a big reduction as he pressed on with consolidating the budget.

After bickering about taxes since taking office in 2009, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet of Christian Democrats and Free Democrats formally passed on the 6 July 2011 a pledge to reduce tax burdens in 18 months.
