Date: 24/05/01 SOCIAL affairs chief Anna Diamantopoulou wants the Union to spend €12 million on making 2003 the European Year of People with Disabilities. The Greek Commissioner unveiled plans this week to dedicate the year to raising awareness of the problems faced by the 38 million EU citizens - about 10% of the population- who have some form of disability. "2003 must be a time for Europe to become more aware of disability issues and to challenge the barriers that prevent people with disabilities from fully participating in work and beyond," she said. |
