Biofuels could give breathing space to carmakers

The car manufacturing industry in Europe has been trying for some years to get out of a promise to consider ways to improve fuel efficiency to about 65 miles per gallon by 2012, warning that the engine advances necessary would add thousands of pounds to the cost of a new car.
