When is a chairman not a chairman? When he has disgraced himself and alienated his colleagues by entering into a political alliance with France's racist National Front.

Jacques Blanc, the Committee of the Regions member who sparked off a furious dispute recently after allegations that he won the Languedoc-Roussillon regional elections by entering into a pact with Jean-Marie Le Pen's merry men, has managed to retain the chairmanship of the CoR's agriculture commission despite calls for his resignation.

But Blanc's enemies in the Committee's Socialist Group have secured an agreement that he will not actually preside over the agriculture commission, nor even attend any of its meetings, as their price for this face-saving compromise.
