Blog: Can Member States seize asylum-seekers’ assets?

In January 2016, several EU and non-EU countries were in the news for taking asylum-seekers' assets upon arrival. Was this compatible with EU law? The authors examine first of all national practice, then the legislative history of the relevant EU rules, then reach conclusions.
