Bolstering the EU-Africa security partnership

European and African leaders are meeting to discuss the future of the EU-Africa partnership. There has been little progress in this partnership in recent years and expectations for the summit are low. Against this disappointing backdrop, peace and security stands out as an area where EU-Africa engagement has been relatively successful.

This success has been due primarily to shared interests and substantial EU support. However, according to FRIDE Senior Researcher Clare Castillejo, there are still significant gaps in the EU-Africa peace and security partnership and this summit provides an important opportunity to address them.
