Bonn: the key points of the deal

• Overall target: 5.2% reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases by industrialised countries between 1990 and 2012
• Sinks: Carbon-absorbing forests will count against national reductions - up to 3% of the overall target
• Flexible mechanisms: rich countries can offset funding for emissions-reducing projects in developing countries
• Emissions trading: governments can buy the right to exceed their limits from countries falling short of theirs
• Poor countries: will receive around h570 million a year in funding for their own climate-change programmes
• Penalties: countries breaking the limits will have stiffer targets imposed in the next round of reductions
