Brexit, equality and human rights in Wales

The Welsh Brexit blog aims to inform and encourage constructive debate and analysis on issues relating to Wales and the UK's exit of the European Union. Catherine May, Principal at the Equality Human Rights Commission in Wales, wrote that the Commission had a role to play in ensuring that equality and human rights were central to the debate on the EU Withdrawal Bill. The UK’s decision to leave the European Union had possible implications for the Equality Act 2010, as well as other laws that related to areas such as maternity and parental rights, accessibility for disabled people, and immigration.

The Commission was advising all political parties on amendments that can be made to the Bill that will ensure that, after we leave the EU, there was no regression to the equality and human rights protections existing in Wales and the rest of the UK.
