The European Commission has decided on 25 July 2001 to propose a Regulation according to which charges for transactions in euros in the internal market should be the same for cross-border payments as for those within a single Member State. This provision would apply from 1 January 2002 for card payments and cash dispensers and from 1 January 2003 for bank transfers and cheques. Article says that although the Commission had been calling for this for the last 11 years, cross-border charges still remain much higher than those for internal transfers.
