Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe, caused fury in the European Commission by attending the World Food Summit in Rome, 10-13 June 2002. His visit did not break a European Union travel ban since it does not apply when officials are travelling for meetings of international organisations. A spokesman for Chris Patten, European Commission for External Relations, said that Mr Mugabe's policies were contributing to hunger in his country. |
