Former Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Science Minister Erhard Busek is being tipped as rector of the College of Europe in Bruges, the training ground for EU officials and diplomats.

He is understood to have the support of Jacques Santer for the post at the independent college which receives some EU subsidies. The only other likely candidate from the EU is Germany's ambassador in Moscow Norbert von Gablentz.

The previous rector, Frenchman Gabriel Fragniere, resigned after allegations of financial irregularities.
