European legislation due to be implemented in November 2010 threatens widespread disruption to the supply of products, from aero engines to packaging, says EEF representing UK manufacturers, who are calling on the UK government to back a 12-month postponement of the new rules.

Subsequently, the UK government wrote to the European Commission calling for the phasing in of some aspects of the new rules to be postponed to avoid 'disruptive knock-on effects' to large sections of industry, including the aerospace and automotive sectors.

However, environmental groups criticised the call for delays.
