Book abstract:

This fifth edition of 'Cases & Materials on EC Law' aims to make students of the basic principles of EC law aware of the momentous changes that are currently taking place in Europe. More and more students are now studying this subject and this book equips the student with a range of materials relevant to the development of the European Community and its policies. In addition, it provides a carefully chosen selection of the major judgments delivered by the European Court over the last forty years and some of the most important pieces of Community legislation with which the student will need to become familiar.

This fifth edition remains faithful to the format of the previous editions, but it now describes the Community within the broader structure of the European Union as adjusted by the Treaty of Amsterdam, which entered into force in 1999. The author provides an overview of the Treaty in the introduction. It also includes an up-to-date examination of recent changes in fields such as competition policy and the maintenance of the internal market, and traces the impact of the principle of subsidiarity and of notions of 'flexibility' on the legal order.

The book is split into three parts. Part one; The constitutional law of the EC. Part two; Community trade law and policy. Part three; Enforcement of community law.

The author, Stephen Weatherill, is Jacques Delors Professor of EC law at the University of Oxford and is a Fellow of Somerville College. He has previously taught at the universities of Nottingham, Manchester and Reading.
