Catalan Day. Hundreds of thousands form human chain for Catalan independence

Hundreds of thousands of people joined hands to form a human chain of 400km across Catalonia in a massive show of support for the independence movement as the region celebrated its national day on the 11 September 2013. They were pressing the Spanish government to let them vote in a referendum on breaking away and creating their own country.

Separately, Spain’s main radio station, published an opinion poll on the National Day indicating that 52.3% of Catalans would vote ''yes' in an independence referendum, while 24.1% would vote against it.
