Book abstract:

The problems confronting changes in Central and Eastern Europe affect both the nations of this region and the already developed nations in the rest of the world. This volume brings together a series of papers on Central and Eastern Europe, from different contributors, that deal with issues and questions as diverse as the role of these countries in the marketplace, cheap labour, emigration to developed nations, matters of political and economic integration, and the conflicts possibly generated by the more insular policies adopted by these nations in the future.

Over eleven chapters, the book is both broad and detailed in scope. After chapter one has outlined some of the major problems and prospects facing the transition of central and Eastern Europe to democracies, like economic regression, social, economic and political distress and regional 'dis-integration', chapter two turns to the question of the Slovak Republic's export to developing countries. Chapter three looks at the prospects of an efficient social safety net in terms of Czech social reforms throughout the nineties, chapter four asks whether or not the European central bank should be involved in the size and financing of health budgets in the region, and chapter five provides an empirical analysis of high inflation in these transition economies. In chapter six there is work on tensions over how to address IMF and World Bank activities in Russia and Asia; chapter seven turns to the dilemma of South-eastern Europe and the 'Security Community'; chapter eight deals with social policy throughout the area, and chapter nine, on the specific case of Serbia, explores the implications of a failed transition. Chapter ten provides a comparative study of Russia and the Ukraine, in respect of obstacles to economic reform (1991-94), and chapter eleven closes the book with an investigation into the opportunities lost over pensions reform and privatisation.
