Summary: Hungary’s Central European University, a graduate school founded by US financier George Soros, announced on 25 October 2018 to leave the country and move to Vienna in a month if an agreement with Hungarian government could not be concluded. On 19 November 2018 Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz met with billionaire George Soros to discuss moving the Central European University from Hungary to Vienna. The CEU will be able to occupy a building of the 100-year-old Otto Wagner hospital near Schönbrunn next spring if it moves and it would be prepared to accept students of the next 2019/2020 academic year. Further information: The US billionaire, who promotes liberal causes through his charities, has been the subject of a campaign by the right-wing government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. CEU has been operating in Budapest for 25 years, But the Hungarian Government has kept CEU in legal limbo since April 2017, the University says. The university was asked to remove Gender Studies from its MA programs list. While the Hungarian government said the announcement by the CEU is a Soros-style political bluff. |
