Article considers the issue of corporate social responsibility which can be defined as a concept whereby companies decide voluntarily to contribute to a better society and cleaner environment. Initiatives in this area include, for example, improved recruiting policies (non-discrimination), better opportunities for racial minorities, greater involvement with local communities and offering support on changes at work. The debate moved to the European Parliament on 30 May 2002 when MEPs are to vote on a call by (UK) MEP Richard Howitt for new rules requiring annual social and environmental reports alongside financial accounts, as part of a revision of European Union company law.
