Changing patterns of migration from Pakistan to Germany. From fleeing persecution to seeking a better life

Diverse patterns of cross-border mobility are an integral feature of Pakistan’s history. Since its birth as a nation, the country has been marked by population movements across its borders that are driven by a variety of political, sociocultural, economic, and religious forces. These migration flows have had both positive and negative effects on its economic development and society.

This paper analyzes recent migration patterns from Pakistan to Germany and changes in their underlying factors and motivations. Around the world, people with different socioeconomic and educational back-grounds are increasingly migrating in similar directions and using the same migration infrastructures. While some are driven to flee by threat of persecution and are therefore seeking asylum, others are driven by economic reasons (Angenendt, 2017). This phenomenon of "mixed migration" is of key relevance to the patterns of migration from Pakistan to Germany.
