Date: 03/06/1999 the European Commission announced this week, as it moved to implement a European Court of Justice ruling that the name had become a generic term. Athens had argued that its cheese-makers should continue to benefit from EU rules which allow the makers of some foods to label their produce with a special logo denoting specialities which are limited to a particular region. Commission officials said manufacturers in other European countries had been producing their own versions of the cheese since the early 1960s. |
