Talks in Geneva on Chinese membership of the WTO stalled on 12.1.01, and, in fact, slower progress has been made than expected. In particular China is refusing to give way to demands by the US and other agricultural exporting countries that it forego its extra flexibility as a developing country under WTO rules to subsidise its farmers.
