The leadership of Spain's centre-right party Ciudadanos announced on 23 February 2016 they were ready to support the Socialist Party's (PSOE) leader Pedro Sánchez in his bid to become prime minister.

The move was seen as a U-turn for the party that came fourth in the general election on 20 December 2015, and whose leader, Albert Rivera, had until then always insisted that he would at best abstain in the vote to install Sánchez as prime minister and would not support an administration of which he was not directly a part.

However, Podemos suspended negotiations with the PSOE on the 24 February 2016, making it more difficult for the PSOE to create a viable coalition by the 1 March 2016 deadline.

A investiture debate in the Spanish Congress began on the 1 March 2016, which was expected to lead to a vote of confidence in a government led Socialist chief Pedro Sanchez on the 2 March 2016. Analysts doubted whether the vote of confidence would be passed.

Pedro Sánchez called on parties of the left and centre to bury their differences and support him as leader of 'a government of change'.
