Date:18/09/03 THE UK's House of Lords' European Union Committee, in a report last February titled Energy Supply: How Secure Are We?, took issue with the way coal was described in a November 2000 EU Green Paper on energy security as an "undesirable" fuel. "All energy sources have disadvantages as well as advantages and coal is not alone in this," the report states. "Coal remains the world's largest single source of electricity. It is a key element of energy diversity and flexibility. We recommend that Europe avoid handicapping coal unnecessarily. The focus of support for coal should be the development of clean coal technologies, not support for unprofitable coal mines." The UK House of Lords' European Union Committee issued a report in February 2003, 'Energy supply: How secure are we?' which took issue with the way coal was described as an 'undesirable fuel' in a European Union Green Paper, 'Towards a European strategy for the security of energy supply', published in November 2000. |
