Date: 19/12/02 The European Commission this week launched the first round of its new €17.5 billion 6th framework research and development programme with calls for proposals for projects worth €5 billion. Most of the cash will go to areas singled out for "strategic importance" in 2002-2006. These range from life sciences and aeronautics to information technology, energy and transport. €69 million of the first round of funding will go to nuclear research. Upstream "pre-competitive" research funding will boost university scientists, government laboratories and private firms, in candidate countries as well as the EU-15.
