Date: 15/06/06 The European Commission will release its long-awaited communication on the mid-term review of its White Paper on transport next Thursday (22 June). Industry stakeholders have been calling for an overhaul of key objectives that will put the EU on course to meet objectives on efficiency and competitiveness, in line with the Lisbon Agenda. "It will be a solid strategic paper to guide actions for years to come," said Commission transport spokesman Stefaan de Rynck, adding that the mid-term review would lead among other things, to a Green Paper on urban transport, legislative proposals on road safety, an action plan on logistics, an internal market review of rail transport and legislation on working conditions in the road transport sector. Acknowledging that the EU is not on target to achieve objectives on halving the number of people killed in road accidents by 2010, the communication will also include a special focus on road safety. "We're going to continue on the same track as the 2001 paper in areas like liberalisation, innovation, investment and technology," he said. Article anticipates the presentation of the European Commission's long-awaited Communication on the mid-term review of its White Paper on transport on 22 June 2006. |
