Communication published by the European Commission on 6 June 2014, setting out a framework concerning health and safety at work for the period 2014-2020.

Further information:

This framework identifies key challenges and strategic objectives for health and safety at work and presents key actions and instrument to address these. It aims at ensuring that the Member States of the European Union (EU) play a leading role in the promotion of high standards for working conditions both within Europe and internationally. This is line with the Europe 2020 Strategy.

The strategic framework identifies three major challenges relating to health and safety at work:

  • To improve implementation of existing health and safety rules;
  • To improve the prevention of work-related diseases;
  • To take into account of the ageing of the EU's workforce;

The Commission argues that it is within EU competence to support Member States in addressing risks to workers' health and safety and ensuring a level playing-field across the European Union. This framework builds on the 2007-2012 EU Occupational Health and Safety Strategy. It takes into account the results of its evaluation and contributions from a wide range of stakeholders, the results from a public consultation and views expressed at a Conference on Working Conditions.
