Against the background of a Communication released by the European Commission setting out a strategy for the relations between the Western Balkans and the European Union going forward, the European Council showed its support to a Summit scheduled for May 2018 in which this subject was set to be discussed.

The European Council also condemned the actions taken by Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea, showing solidarity with Cyprus and Greece. It urged Turkey to respect the Cypriot right to exploiting its natural resources and showed concerns over the detention of EU citizens in Turkey.

The European Council adopted on 22 March 2018 a set of conclusions relating to the relations between the European Union and the Western Balkans region, as well as on Turkish activities conducted in the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean seas.
