Some 300 high level representatives from all sides of the aviation field gathered in Brussels on 20 September 2006 to discuss the future of the regulatory system. This conference – hosted by the European Commission and the Industry Consultation Body (ICB) – was sparked off, by the realisation that Europe’s aviation regulatory structures are extremely varied and need to be refined in order to answer to the challenges of globalisation and increasing cross-border air travel.

The conference evidenced a clear intention to move from a complex situation with global, intergovernmental, regional, national and private actors towards a situation, where regulatory responsibilities are clearly grouped under the Community umbrella, thus avoiding both gaps and overlap.
