Abstract:

Changes in party influence in the May 2001 elections were limited, confirming that continuity in vote pattern is the norm in Cypriot parliamentary elections. Parties had relatively small gains or losses, consolidating to a very high degree their share in previous elections. When these changes are seen in perspective, though, they are indicative of gradual changes and shifts in vote preference. In this context, there is a rebalancing or a new pattern of voting for some parties. This resulted in the emergence of the communist party, AKEL, as first party and the entry of new forces into parliament. Under the island's presidential system, parliamentary elections are the starting point for alliance formation in view of the presidential election, due in February 2003.
