Date: 21/10/1999 Consumer Protection Commissioner David Byrne confirmed this week that he is considering banning another antibiotic used in animal feed, amid fears that its use could make it harder to fight infection in humans. Officials say the drug in question is avilamycin, made by the US drugs company Eli Lily. Byrne said he was also examining a recommendation to phase out the use of three other animal feed products. The EU has already banned four products used to increase the growth rates of pigs and poultry after scientists warned that they could reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics in combatting human diseases. |
