...has called for the EU's ban on the use of the cattle hormone BST to continue indefinitely. He said maintaining the embargo on the substance, which increases milk production in dairy cows, would protect animal health and welfare. Scientific studies have found that use of the hormone can lead to increased incidence of cattle diseases such as mastitis. The Union's existing five-year temporary ban on BST is due to expire at the end of this year.
