Abstract:

This collection of essays, written in French, German and English, pays tribute to the work of Günther F. Schäfer and his twenty years of work at the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) in Maastricht, and as a 'thank you' from his former colleagues and associates for his good counsel and guidance throughout that time.

The range of topics covered reflect the nature of the relationship of the different authors with Günther Schäfer and their own specialisation. Essays by Christine Neuhold, Alexander Türk and Torbjörn Larsson are concerned with his work on committees and comitology, while Klaus Gretschmann and Dieter Freiburghaus address economic issues and the relationship between the European Union and Switzerland. The EU's development in foreign policy fields and the organisation of training of EIPA officials throughout Europe, especially in the German Länder, are featured in contributions from Heinrich Siedentopf, Christoph Demmke, Julia Ettl, Christian Engel and Gaston Stronck. The European Institute of Public Administration itself is featured in an article by Robert Polet which gives a brief history of its development in which Günther Schäfer played such an important part.

The work will interest students and scholars of Public Administration in European Affairs.
