Date: 28/05/03 ECHOING concerns that have been voiced by environment ministers, Europe's eight largest NGOs have urged the Convention on the EU's future to take the environment more seriously in the constitution it is drafting. In a joint statement and open letter to the praesidium of the Convention, the 'Green 8' said they had serious concerns relating to "unambitious" definitions of environmental protection and sustainable development, "deterioration" of the principles of policy coherence and "vague" requirements for participatory democracy. Environmental NGOs have accused the European Convention of failing to do enough for the future of the environment in the draft constitution. |
